👑 Jesus Walked Before Them: The Leadership of the Cross

📖 “And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed, and as they followed they were afraid.” — Mark 10:32

❤️ Greetings, dear friends and family in Christ.

Today, while doing my regular reading in the Gospel of Mark, I found myself completely stopped by a single, powerful phrase: “Jesus was going before them.” It immediately reminded me of the remarkable, unmatched Leader that we are following. At this moment in Scripture, Jesus Christ was on His way to Jerusalem to fulfill the ultimate will of God the Father. He knew exactly what was waiting for Him there—betrayal, suffering, and the cross.

Yet, looking at His response, we see a masterclass in true leadership.

🛡️ Leading from the Front, Even Toward Danger

When facing imminent danger, Jesus did not ask His disciples to go ahead of Him. He did not use His followers as a shield for His own safety or convenience. Instead, He intentionally chose to walk before them, leading from the front—straight into the heart of suffering.

The disciples walked behind Him, amazed, yet afraid. They were witnessing a King who was willing to walk into the fire first.

🌍 The Contrast with Worldly Leadership

This reveals a breathtaking model of leadership that completely contradicts the world’s standards.

If we look at history and modern society, many leaders act very differently. The world often celebrates leaders who seek admiration, power, and absolute loyalty. Some demand so much that their followers are forced to sacrifice their time, their family relationships, and sometimes even their lives. History is filled with leaders who have used their people as a protective wall, placing themselves safely behind those who serve them.

Worldly leadership is often about self-preservation.

❤️ True Leadership Requires Sacrifice

But Jesus redefined leadership forever. True leadership—the leadership of the cross—is not about authority over others; it is about sacrificial love for others.

A genuine, Christ-like leader does not hide behind their followers in difficult times. Instead, they stand before them, especially in moments of:

🌪️ Risk

🌫️ Uncertainty

⚠️ Danger

A true leader carries the burden. He faces the threat. He leads with unshakeable courage and deep responsibility. Jesus demonstrated this perfectly, not just by walking ahead of His disciples on the road, but ultimately by giving His life for them on the cross.

🤔 Questions for Our Hearts

As believers, this challenges us to reflect deeply on our own lives.

• What kind of leaders are we following in our daily lives?
• What kind of leaders are we becoming in our homes, our workplaces, and our ministries?

I am so incredibly proud to be a follower of my Lord, Jesus Christ. He never asks His followers to walk where He Himself has not already gone. He walks before us in our suffering, in our trials, in our uncertainty, and even through death itself. And because He walks before us, we can follow Him with absolute confidence.

✨ Final Reflection

The world admires those who protect themselves, but the Kingdom of God celebrates those who serve. Christ honors those who are willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others.

May we faithfully follow the Leader who walked ahead of us to the cross, and may His Spirit empower us to become leaders who serve, protect, and fiercely love those entrusted to our care. For the greatest Leader in human history was also the greatest Servant—and His name is Jesus Christ.
