👁️ May the Eyes of Our Heart Be Enlightened
📖 A Personal Reflection on Ephesians 1:18-19
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.”

🙏 Praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ!
During my regular Bible study on Ephesians chapter 1, this prayer of Apostle Paul deeply touched my heart. Paul does not merely pray for believers to receive blessings, but for something even more important — that the eyes of our heart may be enlightened.
👁️ A person may have physical sight and yet remain spiritually blind. Therefore, Paul prays that believers may receive spiritual understanding concerning three glorious truths:
- 🌅 The hope to which God has called us.
- 🏛️ The riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people.
- ⚡ His incomparably great power for those who believe.
As I continued reading the following chapters in Ephesians, I was amazed to see how beautifully the Holy Spirit unfolds these truths one by one. The answers to Paul’s prayer in chapter one are wonderfully explained in the chapters that follow.
🌅 1️⃣ The Eyes of Our Heart Must Be Enlightened About The Hope of His Calling
📖 Paul explains this hope in Ephesians chapter 2:
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air…”
Before Christ found us, we were not merely weak people trying to become better people. Scripture says we were dead in our sins.
We were controlled by the patterns of this world, influenced by the ruler of the kingdom of the air, and slaves to sinful desires. We walked in disobedience and stood under condemnation.
Yet many times after becoming believers, when we fail or struggle, we forget where the Lord brought us from.
Whenever discouragement fills our hearts, we must remember our past condition:
- ⛓️ We were slaves to sin.
- 🌑 We were prisoners of darkness.
- ❌ We had no hope.
- 🙌 We had no power to save ourselves.
But Christ intervened.
🙌 A Personal Testimony
When I compare this truth with my own life, I can clearly see the depth of God’s mercy.
During my teenage years, I entered a period of great darkness. I became enslaved to a particular weakness that slowly began destroying my life. Until the tenth grade I had been a good student, but as I entered higher secondary education and faced the struggles and temptations common to that age, I became trapped in sin.
📚 My studies suffered greatly.
💭 I lost concentration.
📉 Failure followed failure.
Although I attended church regularly and sincerely desired freedom, I found myself powerless to escape.
💔 The bondage became so severe that I even considered ending my own life. I attempted several times, but by the pure grace and protection of God, none of those attempts succeeded.
One morning, when my family was preparing to take me to a psychiatric doctor, God intervened.
🤝 Through my uncle, I was introduced to a servant of God.
✨ That day became a turning point in my life.
He patiently listened to my struggles, counselled me from the Scriptures, and finally prayed for me.
As he laid his hands upon me and prayed, I experienced a peace unlike anything I had ever known.
It was not emotional excitement.
It was not temporary relief.
🕊️ It was the peace of God entering my heart.
😊 A joy that no earthly pleasure could ever produce filled my soul.
🔥 That encounter created within me a thirst for God — a desire to pray, to worship, to listen to His Word, and to seek Him continually.
Every born-again believer must continually remember the hope of God’s calling, because remembering where He brought us from protects us from returning to darkness.
“But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”
What amazing grace!
⚰️ We were dead.
❤️ He made us alive.
⚖️ We were condemned.
👨👩👧👦 He adopted us.
🌅 We were hopeless.
✨ He gave us eternal hope.
🏛️ 2️⃣ The Eyes of Our Heart Must Be Enlightened About The Riches of His Glorious Inheritance
Paul continues:
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household.”
What a privilege!
Salvation is not merely forgiveness of sins.
God did not simply rescue us from hell.
He brought us into His family.
We became:
- 🌍 Citizens of heaven.
- 🏠 Members of God’s household.
- 🪨 Stones in His holy temple.
- 🕊️ A dwelling place of God through His Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Himself now lives within believers.
This truth changes everything.
🚶 My Personal Journey
After my conversion, I experienced the joy that the world cannot give.
Yet I also noticed something else.
Certain weaknesses still remained.
They no longer ruled me as before, but they continued to fight against me.
🏆 Sometimes I won.
😔 Sometimes I failed.
Whenever I failed, however, I could not remain in that condition for long. The Spirit of God would convict me and draw me back.
This battle repeated itself many times, and gradually I began losing hope and joy.
Then I understood the words of Paul in Romans chapter 7:
“Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me… What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?”
But Paul does not end there.
He immediately declares:
“Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
For several years I lived in that struggle.
Then I began hearing from God’s servants about the ministry and empowering work of the Holy Spirit.
I attended several meetings and prayer gatherings where believers sought God earnestly.
🔥 One day the Lord touched me in a special way and strengthened my inner man through the anointing of His Spirit.
From that point onward, I began to experience new strength within.
🤝 I joined regular fellowships.
I learned to recognize the work of God in everyday life.
My spiritual life became stronger.
However, after receiving a job opportunity, I moved away from those fellowships and gradually began drifting spiritually.
🙏 Prayer became less frequent.
📖 Bible reading slowly disappeared.
🌫️ The old habits and struggles began returning.
Then, through a fellowship meeting that I attended only because of the insistence of my mentor, God lovingly warned me and restored me again.
His grace brought me back.
Through this experience I learned a valuable lesson:
Backsliding often begins when we forget that we are God’s temple and that His Spirit lives within us.
When our hearts remain enlightened with this truth, we will value:
- 🙏 Prayer
- 📖 Bible reading
- 🤝 Fellowship with believers
- 🧭 Spiritual accountability
These become God’s instruments to preserve us and keep us on the path He has prepared for us.
⚡ 3️⃣ The Eyes of Our Heart Must Be Enlightened About His Incomparably Great Power
Paul writes:
“That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms…”
The power available to believers is not ordinary strength.
It is resurrection power.
⚡ The very power that raised Jesus from the dead now works in those who believe.
Christ reigns above:
- 👑 Every authority.
- 👑 Every dominion.
- 👑 Every power.
- 👑 Every spiritual force.
Therefore, believers need not live in fear.
🕊️ A Personal Experience of God’s Power
A few years ago, I stayed in the home of one of my close relatives for several days.
During my stay, I began experiencing unusual spiritual disturbances during the night.
Initially I assumed they were merely dreams and ignored them.
However, the same thing occurred repeatedly.
One evening, before going to bed, I felt strongly led by the Holy Spirit to spend extra time in prayer rather than offering my usual short prayer.
As I prayed, the Lord impressed upon my heart a particular Christian song that is well known in our locality.
🎵 I sang it repeatedly and boldly during prayer.
✨ As I continued praying, I sensed the peace and presence of God filling the room.
😌 After a long period of prayer, I went to sleep peacefully.
From that night onward, the disturbances never returned.
The Lord once again reminded me that His power is real and active.
🛡️ When believers walk according to His will and remain under His guidance, no power of darkness can prevail against the authority of Christ.
✨ Conclusion
Paul’s prayer remains one of the greatest prayers a believer can pray:
👁️ May the eyes of our heart be enlightened.
May we never forget:
✔ The hope to which He has called us.
✔ The riches of His glorious inheritance among His people.
✔ The incomparably great power that works for us who believe.
When our hearts remain enlightened with these truths:
- 🌅 Hope will overcome despair.
- 👑 Identity will overcome condemnation.
- ⚡ Power will overcome fear.
- ❤️ Grace will overcome failure.
And we will continue to walk faithfully in the path God has prepared for us.
🙏 May the Lord continually enlighten the eyes of our hearts until the day we see Him face to face.
