“If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.” > — Psalm 137:5–6
🏛️ The Cry for Jerusalem: More Than a City
When we read the words of Psalm 137, we witness an intense, unshakeable devotion. The captive Israelites in Babylon were looking back at Jerusalem—not merely as a geographical location or a capital city, but as the dwelling place of God, the epicenter of His presence, and the symbol of His covenant.
The psalmist declares a solemn vow: If Jerusalem ever slips from his highest affection, let his skills fail him, let his voice fall silent. He chose to prefer Jerusalem “above my chief joy.”
As believers in Jesus Christ, when we meditate on this phrase, a deep and piercing question arises in our hearts: What occupies the place of our “chief joy”?
In our daily lives, joy comes to us in many forms. It can be found in people we love, places of comfort, exciting moments, personal achievements, hobbies, or even our favorite cuisines. But the Word of God challenges us to examine whether our ultimate source of delight is anchored in something temporary—or anchored eternally in the presence of the Lord.
⚽ The Trap of Misplaced Passions
It is easy to let our passions drift without even realizing it. Consider how easily earthly things capture our complete emotional investment.
A while ago, news broke of fans reacting with intense anger and ruckus in the streets after their favorite national team lost the World Cup. It was a stark reminder of how deeply people tie their happiness, identity, and peace to sports. When the team wins, jubilation fills the air; when the team loses, despair and anger take over. Their joy is thoroughly incorporated with a football match.
As children of God, saved by His grace, we must ask ourselves an honest question: Are we doing the exact same thing in other areas of our lives?
Many Christians today are heavily entangled in temporary pursuits. We find ourselves stressed, anxious, or deeply distressed over the victories and defeats of sports teams, worldly achievements, or fleeting pleasures. While physical exercise and sports are healthy and enjoyable in their proper place, they should never hold the throne of our hearts. When a game’s outcome dictates our peace of mind, our joy has been misplaced.
⚖️ Personal Reflections: When Minor Things Steal Our Peace
The Holy Spirit often convicts us through everyday experiences. Looking back at my own life, I can recall moments where my heart drifted far from its true anchor.
1. The Trap of Petty Rivalries
A few months ago, during a local regional sports series, a particular team—let’s call them Team X—acted with immense arrogance toward opposing fans after defeating Team Y. Seeing their pride stirred up a spirit of competition and bitterness within me. I began following every match they played, not out of casual enjoyment, but with a serious, consuming desire to see them fail. When they finally lost the series and were eliminated, a wave of satisfaction washed over me.
Yet, when I opened God’s Word shortly after and read Psalm 137, the Lord gently rebuked my heart. He showed me how petty and consuming my focus had become. My mind had been hijacked by a temporary rivalry rather than resting in His peace and grace.
2. Subtle Substitutes for His Presence
On another occasion, part of my weekly routine involved attending church services in a nearby town. Afterward, my family and I would visit a cozy café located in a warm, peaceful area to spend time together.
For months, this routine repeated, until a quiet realization dawned on me: I was secretly looking forward more to the café visit than to the church service and fellowship with God. The comfort of the place and the atmosphere had subtly edged out the hunger for His presence. The Lord used His Word to correct me, reminding me that no place, no comfort, and no earthly routine should ever rival Him as my chief joy.
🔍 Examining Our Own Hearts
Think about your own life right now. What sits at the center of your affections?
- Is your ultimate happiness tied to a person you love more than God?
- Are you searching for fulfillment in a place, a career milestone, or a lifestyle?
- Does a temporary disappointment shatter your peace because your anchor is in the wrong place?
If the Holy Spirit is gently nudging your heart about an area where your affections have drifted, do not be discouraged. Instead, let it be an invitation to realign.
🙏 A Prayer for a Realigned Heart
True joy cannot be manufactured by human willpower; it is a gift born of intimacy with God. We can boldly ask the Lord to reshape our desires through prayer and supplication:
“Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have allowed temporary things, earthly pursuits, and fleeting pleasures to become my chief joy. Cleanse my heart from misplaced passions and petty distractions. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon me, and grant me a deep, unshakeable hunger for Your presence. Let You alone be my supreme delight, my refuge, and my eternal treasure. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
